SCRAPS wraps Empty the Shelter 2012

SCRAPS wraps Empty the Shelter 2012

The idea came from a children's book that advocated giving shelter dogs a break from the kennel. And for the second straight year, Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service tried to complete the daunting task of clearing the kennel before the New Year.

After December 2012 wrapped up there were only two adoptable cats and two adoptable dogs left at the facility, with 146 adoptions completed.

“We got to 98 percent of our goal,” Nancy Hill, animal protection director, said.

Hill said she got the idea for the Clear the Kennel effort when she read “A Dog Named Christmas” – a story about a boy who convinces families to take dogs out of the shelter for Christmas.

PETA offers tips for pet care in heavy snow

PETA offers tips for pet care in heavy snow

There are several things to consider when Mother Nature dumps a half-foot of snow on the area.

PETA sent out several tips Monday for pet owners and animal-conscious citizens, because “dogs and other animals can suffer from frostbite and exposure, and they can become dehydrated when water sources freeze.”

Here are some of PETA's tips:

  • Keep animals indoors. This is absolutely critical when it comes to puppies and kittens, elderly animals, small animals, and dogs with short hair, including pointers, beagles, pit bulls, Rottweilers, and Doberman pinschers. Short-haired animals will also benefit from a warm sweater or a coat on walks.

Dog hit on I-90 gets international help

Dog hit on I-90 gets international help

A dog that was trapped on I-90 for at least two days is getting a second chance at life - thanks to some international donors.

Spokanimal believes Peaches was hit by a car on I-90 near Freya sometime late last week. They got a call about the Peaches last Friday. She was found limping around lost hiding in shrubs along the freeway.

With help from police, they were able to get Peaches out of the I-90 corridor and transported to Spokanimal.

"We brought her here she had an injury to her leg and we put her on pain medication over the weekend waiting for an owner to call to claim her, but they didn't, I was just amazed," Spokanimal's Gail Mackie said.  "Look at the eyes, it won us over and how could you not help something like that?"

Peaches was badly injured by the time she arrived at Spokanimal. Her hip joint had popped out of its socket. The veterinarians couldn't pop it back in, so Peaches needed to have surgery.

She successfully underwent surgery Tuesday and will spend the next two months recovering.

SCRAPS officer breaks window to rescue dog

SCRAPS officer breaks window to rescue dog

If it wasn't for the quick thinking of a SCRAPS officer, a dog would have died from being trapped in a hot car.

According to the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS), they recieved a call that a dog was left inside a Ford Explorer in the parking lot of the Spokane Valley Mall Wednesday afternoon.

When protection officer Francie Rapier arrived, she found a basset hound locked inside the SUV with the four windows lowered about an inch.

Although it was only 80 degrees outside, Rapier discovered the temperature inside the vehicle had climbed to about 97 degrees. She also saw the dog was panting heavily.

Rapier said she called the fire department, but neither she nor fire crews could get one of the doors unlocked to set the dog free. That's when Rapier said she decided to break the driver's window to free the dog.

When the dog was released, Rapier said the temperature was 114 degrees inside the SUV.

The dog's owner, Justin D. Dalton was charged with unsafe confinement and animal cruelty in the second degree. Dalton said he was as the mall to watch a movie with his son.

Now is the time to adopt a cat!

Now is the time to adopt a cat!

If you're in the market for a cat, boy have we got a deal for you! The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) has more than 50 cats and kittens in need of a home.

To help ease the overcrowding, SCRAPS is waiving the cat adoption fee today and tomorrow.  Those fees normally range between $40 and $62, so this is quite a savings. The cats are already spayed or neutered.  You only pay the $15 pet license fee.

You can find these adorable kitties at the Spokane Valley Petco through Saturday evening. For more information, check out the SCRAPS website.  If you're not a cat person, they also have some pretty cute dogs!

Happy birthday, Spokane Humane Society!

Happy birthday, Spokane Humane Society!

Join the Spokane Humane Society as they celebrate their 115th birthday this Saturday at 6607 North Havana Street from 11 am - 2 pm.  They are inviting all of their four-legged "alumni" and their forever families back to the shelter for the celebration.

The Spokane Humane Society has a lot of great activities planned for the party.  Animals and their owners from each year can gather for special photos. Everyone is welcome to bring pets they have adopted from the Spokane Humane Society so they can interact with everyone.  You can also bring and share photos of your pets, tour the facility and see the new spay/neuter clinic.  They will even hold a special memorial for all of the pets that have passed away.

Also, local area dog groups will be on hand to display some of their favorite dog activities including frisbee chasing, agility training, obedience training and even a few dance moves.

For the past 115 years, the Spokane Humane Society has sought to provide a safe clean shelter, food, medical assistance and forever homes for abandoned and homeless animals.  They are hoping you will help them celebrate all of these years of service this Saturday..
