Spokane Valley looking for input on proposed new library

Spokane Valley looking for input on proposed new library

The city of Spokane Valley is looking for your input on the proposed new library and Balfour Park expansion.

Future plans will be discussed at a public meeting at 6:00pm on Monday, April 22 at the Spokane Valley Library at 12004 E. Main.

Officials will present an overview of the library and park design process. Those who come to the meeting will be put into small groups to brainstorm, and then all will come together to share ideas.

Spokane Valley aquired 8.4 acres of land along the north side of Sprague between Herald and west of Balfour Park. The library may purchase a portion of that land for a future library. That move would have to be approved by voters.

For more information on this meeting, contact Parks & Recreation Director Mike Stone at mstone@spokanevalley.org or (509) 720-5400.

Hometown Baritone Headed to NYC

Hometown Baritone Headed to NYC

You might remember Anthony McCain. You may have seen him singing and selling cookies two summers ago to raise money for music school. After two years at the Oberlin Music Conservatory in Ohio, McCain's rich baritone has gotten even better. So much better that he's now been accepted into a summer music program in New York City.

After graduating from North Central in 2011, McCain was given a full ride scholarship to Oberlin. However, he didn't have the money to actually get there. That is why he held the bake sale, and the community stepped in and helped get McCain there.

Last summer McCain was offered a job with a cruise ship. The offer was enticing, but after much thought and conversation with his mentors at Oberlin he declined so he could continue his education. It's proven to be the right choice. This year he has preformed in two of the main stage operas at Oberlin and was also selected as the baritone soloist with the Oberlin Choir on a tour in New York.

A Different View Of American Freedoms

A Different View Of American Freedoms

Each day in the national headlines it seems there is always some battle over the Constitutional Rights of America. Recently, the battle over the 2nd Amendment has dominated the country’s attention in the wake of the Sandy Hook school murders.

In the face of such a tragedy, it is easy to find a quick fix. In the case of Sandy Hook the response by Connecticut lawmakers and many other states has been to pass laws banning certain types of rifles and the size of magazines for those rifles that are already owned. The laws bring comfort to the families who are touched by gun violence; they bring hope that someday America will be free from murders and shootings.

Friends and neighbors debate the merit of such laws. Proponents say the laws will keep people like Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza from walking into a school and killing 26 people. Opponents say the laws only take away the freedoms of law abiding citizens; after all, criminals aren’t known for following the laws in the first place.

So is America becoming safer or are Americans losing their rights?

Army Lends Hand at Morning Star Boys Ranch

Army Lends Hand at Morning Star Boys Ranch

Members of the U.S. Army Recruiting Office in North Spokane as well the 1041st Transportation Company of the Washington National Guard were at the Morning Star Boys Ranch today finishing up a project started in February by the Navy Sea-Bees.

Ron Irwin, the Communications Coordinator for Morning Star says that the work being done goes deeper than just giving the boys a nicer living space. Irwin thinks having the Army there today gives the boys the opportunity see people in the community trying to help them and gives them an opportunity to see people in their peer group giving back.

The partnership started when Irwin asked SFC Justin Musson if he and his soldiers could be involved. Musson was happy to lend a hand. Along with Capt. Jonathan Emery they brought a crew including Non-Commission Officers to take on the task of painting the newly remodeled Murphy House.
