Say Hello to Miss Jones's Kindergartners

Chattaroy Elementary School is tucked away in the rural regions of north Spokane County. At times it might feel far away from the glamour of big cities and exotic lands, but one teacher is changing that.

Around Valentine’s Day, Johnna Jones teaches her kindergarten students what it’s like to make friends near and far. She reaches out for global messages to show her students that they’re closer than they think.

It starts with an email. Anyone in the world can email the classroom and share their Valentine’s Day greetings and well wishes to these hopeful students.

“We had some responses today, a couple from the United Kingdom, North Carolina, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Utah and California,” Jones said.

They’re taking in emails until February 14th. On Valentine’s Day they’ll take a step back from their maps and see how far they were able to communicate with today’s technology.

This isn’t the first time Jones has tried this project. She started it in Texas and brought it with her seven years ago when she came to Chattaroy.

“We have not had one from every state yet. Once we got 30 states. We got some from troops overseas. We even got one from China,” Jones added.

Every message will be pinned to the wall connected to where it came from and students will learn more about that region.

Share: What words of wisdom would you say to these kindergartners? They’re accepting emails until February 14th. Email their teacher at johnna.jones@rsdmail.org.
