School Testing In Washington State

Test results show Washington high school students do well in reading and writing on statewide tests but fall short in science.

Of this year's tenth graders, only about half are passing the science assessment.

81 percent passed the reading test on their first try and nearly 84 percent passed the writing test.

Results from math tests will be released in August.

The high school proficiency exam is one of four state requirements for graduation.

RoadCheck 2011

Washington State patrol troopers and inspectors checked nearly 12 hundred commercial vehicles during last week's three-day "RoadCheck 2011."

The patrol says they issued nearly 18 hundred tickets for violations, took 214 vehicles out of service for safety violations and removed 43 drivers from behind the wheel, mostly for record of duty violations.

One driver was arrested for drunken driving and two had suspended licenses.

Geese Study

Washington Fish and Wildlife biologists and volunteers are putting leg bands on a thousand Canada geese to study population trends in Eastern Washington.

Waterfowl specialist Mikal Moore says they're trying to understand why nesting is declining in rural areas while complaints about urban geese have been rising.

The banding project began this week and continues through next Tuesday. Geese are currently easy to catch because they are molting and unable to fly.

Complete Breakdown of Recent Spokane County Patrols

The results from a recent night time seat belt enforcement patrol in Spokane County were released today. The patrols occurred between May 23rd and June 5th by extra law enforcement patrols on Spokane County roads funded by a grant from the Washington State Safety Commission. Statewide, Washington State Patrol wrote 6,681 tickets. 2,995 of those tickets were seat belt violations. In Spokane County, patrols had the following results:

• 239 were citations due to seat belt violations.

• 43 were citations due to cell phone and texting use.
