County Celebrates Caterpillar Distribution Center on West Plains

Immense support from Spokane officials welcomed the announcement for the Caterpillar Distribution Center to be built starting this summer in the West Plains. The facility is expected to bring 100 to 150 new jobs to Spokane County. All three Spokane County commissioners expressed their support for the project in a press release this afternoon.

High School Students Learn to Fly

High school students from all across Spokane County are getting the chance to get behind the yoke this summer through the Spokane Skills Center. The summer Aerospace Academy will teach the students over the next three weeks a comprehensive taste of the aerospace industry. They spent Wednesday and today getting up in the air with their flight instructors at Geiger Field.

"The feeling was amazing. It's nothing like I've experienced before, but it was kind of choppy," said Bridger Peres, East Valley High School senior.

Effective July 1, All State Liquor Stores To Have Uniform, Expanded Operating Hours
Effective July 1, all state liquor stores will have the same hours of operation.* All state stores will also be open additional hours for added convenience. The WSLCB received funding in the state budget to standardize state store hours. Standardized hours are projected to generate nearly $800,000 in additional revenue during the 2011-13 Biennium. Currently, operating hours vary by location at the 166 state stores. The new state store hours will be:

Monday – Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Friday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m.

Douglas-fir Tussock Moth Outbreak

The Department of Natural Resources wants to alert the public of a caterpillar outbreak in various Washington State counties. Spokane and Whitman County is one of the affected areas of the Douglas-fir Tussock Moth caterpillar. They're native to the area and feed on the leaves of Douglas-fir and True-fir trees. DNR wants to ensure the health of your trees by asking you to immediately report any sign of the moth to DNR or the Washington State University Extension.

EWU Announces Plan to Increase Tuition And Cut Programs

Facing serious cuts in state funding, the Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees has announced a budget that increases tuition by 11% each of the next two years.  The plan will also cut up to 10 degree programs and 15 - 20 positions at the university.    EWU has not announced which programs will be cut, but school spokesman Dave Meany says that decision should come down in the next couple of weeks.
